My work combines my interest in the elemental forces of nature, from the cosmic to the microscopic, with investigations of materials and processes. I work with the raw materials of the earth to explore the elemental forces of the natural world and the sensory relationship between the human and non-human world. I make work with porcelain and mixed media to create sculpture, works at the intersection of art and function, and I bring clay into public engagement.
From gravity, fluid dynamics and electromagnetic forces to the intellect of birds and the molecular cooperation between trees and fungi, the laws of the universe insistently inform my practice. These laws are constantly proving that we humans have no control; my work is created in partnership with this unpredictability.
Mould making and casting is my primary making method in my practice. I also hand build with stoneware clays.
I frequently introduce an expanded palette of materials into the clay, such as refractory concrete, metals and oxides. These materials take their own agency in the making process and create tension, colour, structure.
